Bulgaria’s sole nuclear power plant Kozloduy said that it has taken offline its 1,000 MW unit 6 for regular annual maintenance, which should last until the beginning of November. In the meantime, unit 5 is operating at full capacity.
The statement from the company said that the maintenance works will include necessary repairs and preventive technical maintenance to secure the safety and reliable operation of the equipment.
The reactor will be reloaded with fresh nuclear fuel. During the last fuel cycle, NPP Kozloduy produced 8.2 billion KWh of electricity.
Originally, NPP Kozloduy had six reactors, but four older 440 MW reactors were shut down in 2007 due to nuclear safety concern of the European Union. The plant currently operates two Soviet- built 1,000 MW reactors, unit 5 and unit 6 which were commissioned in 1987 and 1991 respectively.
