Romania has extended its 25% excise-duty reduction on standard diesel through 15 October. The measure is set to continue into October after being previously applied during September. The extension keeps the tax relief in place while higher international prices affect transport and logistics costs.
The temporary policy leaves excise duty at approximately €400 per 1,000 litres. The reduction is worth about €133 per 1,000 litres, equivalent to roughly €0.133 per litre before any related tax effects. Support is reviewed every two weeks under Law 162/2026.
Diesel price changes cited in government assessment
The latest government assessment reported that international diesel quotations were 63.7% higher than the comparison levels used. It also said average Romanian retail diesel prices were up 35.01% versus those same comparison points. These figures were referenced alongside the continued excise relief.
Timeline of excise cuts during August and September
The same 25% reduction applied throughout September. This followed a 20% cut during the second half of August. With the latest extension, the policy remains aligned with the earlier sequence of reductions.
The extension is described as limiting part of the cost increase facing diesel users. At the same time, the short duration leaves transport operators uncertain about fuel expenses beyond mid-October.
