Romania’s Cernavodă Nuclear Plant Faces Extended Downtime for Unit 2

The operational landscape of Romania’s energy sector has been impacted as Nuclearelectrica, the nation’s primary nuclear power producer, announced an extended shutdown for Unit 2 of the Cernavodă nuclear power plant. This decision follows an automatic shutdown triggered by a transformer fault earlier this month.

On May 4, the reactor was disconnected from the national grid when an issue was identified in an insulator linked to one of its power transformers. The incident activated the plant’s automatic protection systems, ensuring a safe and controlled cessation of operations. This incident underscores the importance of robust safety protocols within nuclear facilities.

Currently, Unit 2 is undergoing a controlled outage procedure aimed at repairing and replacing the faulty transformer. This maintenance work adheres to stringent nuclear safety standards and technical regulations. The replacement of the affected transformer with a backup system will likely prolong the unit’s offline status, highlighting challenges in maintaining aging infrastructure in critical energy assets.

Nuclearelectrica has reassured stakeholders that the malfunction did not compromise nuclear safety, as all safety mechanisms functioned as intended during the incident. This assurance is crucial for maintaining public confidence in nuclear energy as a reliable component of Romania’s electricity generation portfolio.

Simultaneously, Nuclearelectrica has confirmed that Unit 1 at Cernavodă is set to enter a planned maintenance outage beginning May 10. During this scheduled maintenance period, engineers will conduct thorough inspections, technical testing, and necessary upgrades to ensure that operations remain safe and efficient going forward.

The Cernavodă nuclear power plant is significant for Romania’s energy landscape; it operates two CANDU reactors and is pivotal in providing baseload power to the national grid. As Romania navigates these operational challenges, the role of its nuclear facilities remains critical in achieving energy security and sustainability goals in the broader Southeast European context.
