Croatia’s Trtar-Krtolin wind farm is preparing a major repowering project that would increase the site’s installed capacity from 11.2 MW to 30 MW, while also adding battery energy storage.
The project envisages replacing the existing 14 Enercon E-48 turbines, each with a capacity of 800 kW, with just five new 6 MW wind turbines. The upgrade would significantly increase electricity production while reducing the number of turbines operating at the site.
The plans also include four battery storage units with a combined capacity of 10 MW/20 MWh. The batteries are expected to provide greater flexibility in managing variable wind generation and enable the facility to respond more effectively to electricity market conditions.
Located near Šibenik, Trtar-Krtolin has been in operation since 2006 and was Croatia’s second wind farm. The repowering project would modernise a site that has been operating for two decades while making greater use of its existing location and grid connection.
The reconstruction is expected to be carried out in stages, covering the installation of new turbine foundations as well as upgrades to electrical connections and communications infrastructure.
The project is being developed by Vjetroelektrana Trtar-Krtolin, a subsidiary of German renewable energy developer wpd. Once completed, the repowered facility would nearly triple the site’s installed wind capacity while retaining much of the existing grid and energy infrastructure.
The combination of 30 MW of wind capacity and 20 MWh of battery storage would also strengthen the project’s ability to integrate renewable generation and participate more flexibly in Croatia’s increasingly dynamic electricity market.
