In Croatia, Koncar has secured an €11.5 million contract from transmission operator HOPS to install a phase-shifting transformer at the Gracac substation. The equipment will strengthen the grid’s ability to control cross-border electricity flows. It will also allow HOPS to manage active-power distribution more precisely.
By directing flows through the network, the transformer is expected to reduce loading on individual transmission lines and improve use of existing infrastructure. The investment comes as Croatia connects more renewable generation. That is making power-flow patterns less predictable and increasing the value of equipment that can redirect electricity through the transmission system.
GreenSwitch programme and project delivery
The project is part of the GreenSwitch cross-border infrastructure programme, which is supported by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility. CEF Energy funding covers 50% of eligible costs. Koncar will supply and install the transformer, while several companies within the group will provide equipment, engineering and technical services.
Once commissioned, the Gracac installation should give HOPS greater flexibility to accommodate additional renewable generation. It is intended to help manage that generation through the existing grid. HOPS will not have to rely solely on building new transmission lines.
