Nofar commissions 315 MW of Romanian solar capacity at Iepuresti and Ghimpati

Nofar has brought 315 MW of solar capacity online in Romania through the Iepuresti and Ghimpati projects. The company said it has commissioned more than 315 MW of solar capacity in the country following total investment of about €250 million. The two facilities are now operating after completing the required steps for grid connection.

Iepuresti and Ghimpati capacity and expected generation

The Iepuresti plant has 169.4 MW of capacity and is currently Romania’s largest operating solar facility. Ghimpati adds a further 146 MW. Together, the projects are expected to generate around 430 GWh annually, equivalent to the electricity use of more than 250,000 households. Their output is projected to avoid approximately 160,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year.

Commercial operation followed network certification and regulatory approvals. The plants were built in parallel over about two years. The commissioning timeline aligned with the completion of both sites’ permitting and connection requirements.

Financing package and battery development at the sites

Financing included a €110 million package agreed in August 2024 with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Raiffeisen Bank International. Part of the financing is backed by an EU InvestEU guarantee. The funding structure supported development through commissioning for the two solar projects.

Nofar is also developing a combined battery portfolio at the sites totaling 280 MW/860 MWh. The storage systems are intended to shift solar generation into higher-priced periods. Nofar said the batteries would provide a stronger role in balancing the grid.

Nofar’s broader Romania portfolio across assets under development

Since entering Romania in 2021, Nofar has assembled a portfolio of around 800 MW of solar and approximately 1.9 GWh of storage across operating, construction and development assets. The company’s pipeline includes projects at different stages alongside the newly commissioned facilities.

The solar plants represent a major capacity addition, while Nofar noted that planned batteries may affect longer-term value as Romania’s photovoltaic fleet expands. It said increasing pressure on midday prices is a factor related to that market dynamic. The company linked storage development to managing generation timing within those price conditions.
