Greece connected around 2.7 GW of new wind projects and solar capacity in the first ten months of 2026, bringing its renewable portfolio to roughly 19 GW. About 2.1 GW of the additions was solar and 600 MW was wind. A further 500 MW of renewable projects could enter operation before the end of the year, while solar now accounts for about 12 GW of installed renewable capacity.
Strong solar output increases curtailment
The rapid expansion is creating more periods when photovoltaic generation exceeds both demand and available export capacity. Transmission system operator ADMIE said renewable aggregators curtail nearly 75% of surplus generation that has not been sold on the day-ahead market during particularly strong solar periods.
Storage and grid capacity
Battery deployment is beginning to provide additional flexibility. ADMIE said the connection of around 800 MW of storage had already helped reduce renewable curtailment by shifting some surplus production to later hours. Around 10 GW of Greece’s renewable fleet is connected directly to the transmission system, while the remaining 9 GW is connected through distribution networks; further solar additions will increasingly depend on storage, grid capacity and flexible demand, rather than generation capacity alone.
