Emergy advances 720 MW Romanian wind portfolio, pursues data centres

Norwegian-Swedish renewable developer Emergy is progressing five wind projects in Romania with a combined planned capacity of about 720 MW. The portfolio is among the more advanced assets in the company’s regional pipeline, but construction and commissioning schedules have not been announced. The projects add to Romania’s position as one of Southeast Europe’s largest renewable development markets.

Renewables and data-centre demand

Emergy is using Romania as a starting point for a broader strategy to link renewable generation with large electricity consumers, particularly data centres. It is seeking to pair new wind and solar assets with long-term customers whose substantial, relatively predictable demand could support investment and financing. In the third quarter of 2026, the company secured exclusive development arrangements covering about 800 MW of potential data-centre capacity across Southeast Europe.

The data-centre projects remain in development and have not entered construction, although several have reached more advanced planning stages. Emergy has also formed a dedicated team to pursue these opportunities. Vice President Gheorghe Ilisei said that pairing renewable generation with data-centre development could benefit both sides: wind and solar projects would gain large, long-term buyers, while operators could secure dedicated renewable electricity supplies.

Regional development pipeline

Emergy’s development pipeline totals as much as 3 GW across Romania, Serbia, Greece and Ukraine. The Romanian wind portfolio is part of a wider regional strategy in which renewable developers are competing for grid connections and permits, as well as for large industrial and digital customers able to underwrite future generation capacity.
