Renalfa starts 269 MW Horia 2 solar plant in Romania

Renalfa Solarpro Group has begun construction of the 269 MW Horia 2 solar plant in Arad county, Romania. The project marks the first phase of a larger renewable complex combining photovoltaic generation and battery storage. Horia 2 will have 269 MW of grid injection capacity.

Solarpro Holding is responsible for engineering, procurement and construction. The plant is part of the Horia-Arad cluster, which Renalfa is developing with French investment manager RGreen Invest.

Solar and storage capacity

The first phase of the wider development is planned to include 568 MW of solar capacity and batteries with 669 MW of power and 2,000 MWh of storage capacity. A later phase could add a standalone 400 MW/1,608 MWh battery facility, with further photovoltaic generation also possible.

Renalfa and RGreen are assessing both lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries rather than committing to one storage chemistry. An artificial-intelligence-based management platform is expected to coordinate solar output, battery charging and discharging, and deliveries to the grid.

Earlier projects incorporated into the cluster

The scheme builds on the partners’ April acquisition of a 365 MW solar development and a separate 400 MW/800 MWh battery project in Arad county. Both assets are being redesigned for incorporation into the broader Horia-Arad development.

The project’s scale reflects Romania’s emergence as one of Southeast Europe’s most active markets for pairing utility-scale solar generation with increasingly large battery systems.
