Romania’s residential photovoltaic market expanded during the first half of 2026, with E.ON Energie Romania installing more than 1,200 rooftop systems under its Solar Home programme. Installations rose by 30% year on year. Since the programme started in 2020, the cumulative total has reached more than 10,500 systems.
Battery inclusion rises in E.ON household projects
The change is increasingly tied to equipment installed behind the solar panels. Battery storage was part of only about 10% of E.ON household projects in earlier years. In contrast, the share increased to 91% during the first six months of 2026.
This shift aligns with a move toward integrated energy setups aimed at increasing self-consumption from rooftop generation. A battery can store surplus midday solar output for use during evening hours. The arrangement is designed to reduce exposure to retail electricity prices and dependence on the distribution network.
Survey results show continued interest without new funding round
Consumer interest remained high even though there was no new funding round under Romania’s Green House photovoltaic programme. A June survey commissioned by E.ON reported that 17% of respondents plan to install solar panels in the next year, unchanged from the previous survey. The survey also showed an increase in households already using rooftop photovoltaics from 8% to 11%.
Among respondents without existing rooftop solar, 15% said they were considering purchasing a home battery. More than half of current solar owners planned to add storage within the following 12 months.
Implications for distribution networks and equipment requirements
The growth in distributed storage could affect electricity flows beyond individual household bills. Aggregated batteries could provide flexibility to distribution networks and help reduce evening demand peaks. Implementing that role would require appropriate metering, control systems and market rules.
For installers and equipment suppliers, demand is shifting from solar-only packages to combined photovoltaic and battery systems. That increases project value but also adds requirements for system design and inverter compatibility. It also raises standards for fire safety, commissioning and long-term warranty management.
