Turkish renewable developer Defic Globe is preparing two battery-storage projects next to operational solar assets near Caracal in Romania’s Olt county. The company is expanding a portfolio that has grown rapidly since it entered the Romanian market. Development is linked to projects being prepared through Future PV, a subsidiary of Defic Globe Enerji.
Battery and solar pairing details near Caracal
Each battery is planned with an installed power rating of 5 MW. The storage units will be paired with photovoltaic plants of 6.89 MW and 7.26 MW. The energy capacity in megawatt-hours has not been disclosed, so the intended storage duration remains unclear.
The projects are at the stage where licensing requirements are expected to play a role in moving them into construction. Romanian licensing procedures generally require evidence that financing is available before construction approval. As a result, the financing package is described as an important threshold for implementation.
Earlier Romanian investments and pipeline expansion
Defic Globe completed its first Romanian investment, an 18 MW solar plant in Caracal, before opening a Bucharest office at the end of 2024. It later acquired 15 project companies with a combined renewable pipeline of 219 MW. The same acquisition also included plans for approximately 320 MWh of battery storage.
The acquisition increased the group’s Romanian development portfolio to around 590 MW. Majority shareholder YEO Technology valued the investment platform at approximately €220 million. Defic Globe is also developing two solar projects totalling 21.3 MW at Bobicești.
Partnerships covering larger renewable portfolios
The company has entered partnerships covering larger project portfolios beyond its Caracal work. These include 129 MW with Shanghai Electric Power and 190 MW with Norway’s Scatec. The Scatec-linked portfolio represents investment of approximately €140 million.
The Scatec-linked projects are supported by contracts for difference covering 70 per cent of their capacity. While the Caracal batteries are smaller than the broader development platforms, they are being added to operating solar assets. Their performance is expected to provide direct evidence on dispatch, degradation, imbalance reduction and market revenues before deployment of the larger 320 MWh storage pipeline.
