Serbia and China strengthen energy cooperation with key agreements

On September 26, Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Đedovic Handanović signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China’s Hunan Rich Photovoltaic Science and Technology to establish a solar panel factory and a 200 MW solar power plant in Paracin, central Serbia. This agreement marks a significant step in enhancing cooperation in the renewable energy sector.

Additionally, Đedovic Handanović signed a framework agreement with China Energy International Group to develop an oil and oil derivative processing facility in Smederevo. This facility, with a capacity to process up to 100,000 barrels per day, represents a substantial investment of 2.4 billion euros.

The minister expressed her enthusiasm for these agreements, emphasizing their importance following the recent historic visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Serbia. “Serbia and China have shown that strong and sincere friendship can bridge great geographical distances,” she noted, highlighting the elevated political and economic relations between the two nations.

Đedovic Handanović also pointed out the significance of the personal rapport between the two presidents, which has facilitated the signing of a Joint Statement aimed at deepening the strategic partnership and fostering a community of shared future in this new era. She remarked that China has become the largest foreign investor in Serbia over the past three years and its second-largest trading partner.
