Serbian transmission system operator EMS has started upgrading the Bajina Bašta substation from 220 kV to 400 kV, supporting the western segment of the Trans-Balkan Corridor. The project covers the current corridor section valued at around €115 million. The works are underway as part of broader grid reinforcement in Serbia.
Bajina Bašta switchyard and transformer scope
At Bajina Bašta, EMS is building a new 400 kV switchyard and installing two 400 MVA transformers. The upgrade is being implemented alongside grid expansion measures in the surrounding transmission network. These parallel works are designed to align substation capacity with associated line and connection developments.
Obrenovac line and bay additions
The Bajina Bašta works are being carried out together with a double-circuit 2×400 kV line from Obrenovac. EMS is also adding two additional bays at the Obrenovac substation. This combination of substation equipment, line capacity and bay additions forms part of the same reinforcement package for the corridor.

The upgrade is intended to provide network capacity for the planned Bistrica pumped-storage plant. The corridor’s third section is scheduled for 2028, while a further section toward Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro is planned for 2029. Once completed, those links are expected to increase capacity available for cross-border electricity flows.
