Renalfa boosts Devnya solar to 65 MW with 60 MW/165 MWh battery

Renalfa has expanded its Devnya solar project in northeastern Bulgaria, increasing generation capacity from 5 MW to 65 MW. The upgrade adds a new 60 MW/165 MWh battery to the site. The project is already connected to the grid.

Renalfa IPP commissioned the expansion at Devnya, adding generation capacity alongside storage. The battery provides the operator with additional options for timing power sales. This added flexibility relates to how output can be shifted away from solar generation hours.

Engineering, procurement and construction contractor

Solarpro Technology carried out the expansion as engineering, procurement and construction contractor. Renalfa has used a similar development approach at Kaolinovo. There, a 60 MW solar plant is paired with 33 MW/110 MWh of storage.

Storage integration and market timing

The Devnya upgrade increases generation at an existing grid-connected location. The battery arrangement is designed to give more control over when electricity is delivered. That flexibility is becoming more relevant as additional solar supply increases pressure on prices during daylight hours.
