Renewables Account for Nearly Half of EU Electricity Consumption

Renewable energy sources accounted for 47.5% of electricity consumption in the European Union in 2024, marking a significant milestone in the region’s energy transition. This figure, derived from Eurostat data, indicates an increase of just over 2 percentage points from the previous year, reflecting a sustained shift towards greener energy solutions within the EU’s electricity landscape.

The growth trajectory of renewables is notable when viewed over the past two decades. In the early 2000s, renewable energy made up less than one-sixth of total electricity use across the bloc. By the mid-2010s, this share had surpassed one-quarter, with a consistent acceleration in adoption and integration into the energy system observed since then.

Wind and hydropower remain critical components of this renewable framework, contributing nearly two-thirds of total green energy output. Wind energy continues to be the predominant source, followed closely by hydropower. Meanwhile, solar power has emerged as a particularly dynamic segment within this transition. Once considered marginal in the late 2000s, solar generation has rapidly evolved into a fundamental pillar of renewable electricity production, with output exceeding 300 TWh in 2024 due to substantial capacity expansions throughout the EU.

On a national level, several EU member states have demonstrated a strong reliance on renewable sources for their electricity needs. Austria and Sweden lead this trend with renewables meeting nearly 90% of their consumption requirements. Denmark also ranks highly in renewable energy utilization. Other countries such as Portugal, Spain, Croatia, Latvia, Finland, Germany, Greece, and the Netherlands have reported renewable shares exceeding 50%, highlighting a broader regional commitment to sustainable energy.

However, not all member states are progressing at the same pace. Countries including Malta, Czechia, Luxembourg, Hungary, Cyprus, and Slovakia are still at an earlier stage in their energy transition journey, with renewable shares remaining below 25%. This disparity underscores the uneven progress across the EU and suggests that targeted policies may be needed to accelerate adoption in lagging regions.

As Europe moves closer to achieving its climate goals and enhancing energy security through increased reliance on renewables, these trends highlight both the achievements made thus far and the challenges that remain ahead in ensuring a cohesive transition across all member states.
