PPC Renewables is making significant strides in Romania’s energy landscape with the initiation of a new battery storage project at the Salbatica 1 wind farm, located in Tulcea county. This facility is designed to have a capacity exceeding 60 MWh and entails an investment of approximately €13.6 million, bolstered by European funding initiatives aimed at enhancing energy infrastructure.
The integration of this battery energy storage system into the existing Salbatica wind complex, which comprises two adjacent wind farms with a total of 70 turbines rated at 2 MW each, marks a pivotal development for the region’s electricity grid. The addition of battery storage is expected to improve network stability and optimize the management of wind-generated electricity, facilitating more efficient utilization of renewable energy within Romania’s national grid.
This project is financed through a combination of private capital and support from the EU Modernization Fund, which contributes nearly €2 million towards eligible costs. This funding represents over a quarter of the total project expenditure, highlighting the collaborative efforts between private entities and European institutions to bolster renewable energy initiatives.
PPC Renewables’ battery development aligns strategically with its broader expansion plans in southeastern Europe. The company is actively increasing its renewable energy portfolio across Greece, Romania, Italy, and Bulgaria. Currently, PPC Renewables operates more than 1.5 GW of renewable capacity in Romania alone and continues to pursue additional large-scale projects that contribute to regional energy goals.
Looking ahead, PPC Group has set an ambitious target to achieve nearly 13 GW of renewable capacity by 2028. The deployment of storage systems like the one at Salbatica will be crucial in accommodating higher levels of variable renewable generation across interconnected electricity markets, thereby supporting a transition towards more sustainable energy practices in the region.
