In a significant move to bolster its energy infrastructure, Greece has initiated a fast-track evaluation process for standalone battery storage projects under a 4.7 GW market-based tender. This initiative aims to modernize the energy sector and enhance grid flexibility, reflecting the country’s commitment to energy transition.
A newly formed committee is actively reviewing project proposals to expedite the identification of projects primed for implementation. This committee includes representatives from ADMIE, the Independent Power Transmission Operator, and DEDDIE, the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator, ensuring effective coordination across both transmission and distribution networks, which is essential for seamless project integration.
The initial phase of this process will concentrate on approximately 2 GW of capacity, with preliminary rankings anticipated by June. Of this capacity, around 900 MW is designated for connection to the distribution network, while approximately 1.1 GW will be connected to the transmission system, demonstrating a balanced allocation across various grid levels.
The evaluation process will align submissions from the Ministry of Environment and Energy with those from network operators. Eligible projects will be prioritized based on established tender criteria after confirming compliance with formal requirements. On the distribution side, DEDDIE will evaluate hundreds of proposals exceeding 2 GW in total capacity, while ADMIE will focus on a subset of transmission projects categorized by technical specifications, indicating strong competition and significant investor interest in this sector.
As the first ranking lists are set to be finalized in the coming weeks, this development is expected to facilitate grid connection approvals for initial projects. The remaining pipeline of around 2.7 GW will undergo assessment at a later stage once additional technical parameters are established, ensuring a structured and phased rollout of battery storage capacity across Greece.
