In a strategic move to enhance energy storage capabilities, the Electric Power Company of Montenegro (EPCG) has reopened the procurement process for a small-scale battery storage system in Nikšić. This decision follows an unsuccessful tender earlier this year that failed to generate any bids, prompting a reassessment of the approach to energy storage development in the region.
The current tender invites proposals for a battery energy storage system with a specified output ranging from 100 to 130 kW and a storage capacity between 200 and 270 kWh. The deadline for interested contractors to submit their bids is set for May 13. This initiative aims to bolster local grid stability through incremental and practical deployment of storage solutions.
Notably, the estimated value of this renewed tender has increased to 90,000 euros, up from 75,000 euros in the previous round, which was canceled in March due to the absence of bids by the February deadline. The contractor selected through this process will be expected to complete installation within 60 days post-contract signing and provide a warranty lasting at least five years, extendable up to twelve years—indicative of enhanced reliability and delivery expectations.
This latest attempt is part of EPCG’s broader efforts to navigate challenges in the battery storage sector. A larger procurement initiative launched last year aimed at two systems with a total capacity of 30 MW and 120 MWh was ultimately abandoned when government financing was not approved. Valued at approximately 58 million euros, that project underscored significant financial constraints and implementation hurdles faced in expanding energy storage infrastructure.
By opting for a smaller-scale tender, EPCG appears to be adopting a more cautious strategy towards integrating battery storage into its operational framework. This approach reflects an awareness of previous difficulties in garnering market interest and securing necessary financial resources. The relaunch signals a measured transition towards modern energy storage solutions, aiming for gradual integration into the existing grid system.
