Renewable developer Econergy has placed a 70 MW/141 MWh battery into commercial operation alongside its Parau 1 solar plant in Romania. The project is positioned as a merchant solar-storage combination. The investment in the combined development reached around €85 million.
Battery capacity and combined site output
The battery operates together with an existing 92 MW solar plant in Brasov county. With both assets at the same location, the site has combined installed capacity of 162 MW. This configuration links storage capacity to an operational solar generation base.
Charging flexibility and market participation
Unlike battery systems restricted to charging directly from their associated renewable plant, the Parau setup can also charge from the electricity network. That capability allows Econergy to buy electricity during low or negative-price periods. The company can then sell when wholesale prices rise, enabling merchant arbitrage exposure for the battery.
Romania storage pipeline and wider European development
Econergy is planning further storage additions across Romania. Its domestic battery pipeline totals 521 MW and more than 1 GWh, including proposed capacity at Ratesti, Oradea, and Ovidiu.
The company also has around 13 GW of projects under development across eight European markets. Storage represents roughly half of the overall pipeline.
Using existing grid connections for solar-storage projects
The Parau project reflects how developers are beginning to use existing grid connections more efficiently in Romania. Adding batteries to operational solar sites can increase the commercial value of the connection. It also allows generators to shift output away from increasingly crowded midday hours.
