In a significant development for the Serbian energy sector, the state-owned utility EPS has reported a record-breaking coal production achievement at its Drmno open-pit mine. As of this year, the cumulative output has reached an impressive 10 million tons, surpassing the previous record of just under 9.908 million tons. This milestone underscores EPS’s commitment to enhancing its coal production capabilities in a period characterized by increasing energy demands.
Kolubara lignite basin also demonstrated robust performance, with the Tamnava–West Field achieving its full-year production target just one day prior to the Drmno announcement. By December 24, miners had extracted 11.5 million tons of coal, representing approximately half of both the planned and actual annual output for the Kolubara mining system. This achievement reflects a concerted effort to maintain productivity levels in a challenging operational environment.
The operational success at Tamnava is particularly noteworthy considering the significant challenges faced throughout the year. A major bucket-wheel excavator was out of commission for six months due to repairs, which could have severely impacted production targets. However, EPS’s ability to meet its annual production plan despite these setbacks highlights effective management and resilience within its operations.
These achievements in coal production come at a crucial time as Serbia seeks to bolster its energy security and maintain stable electricity supply in light of regional energy dynamics.
