Electricity production in North Macedonia experienced a notable surge of 45.1% in October 2025, reaching a total of 511,057 MWh. This increase is attributed to robust domestic supply, which met approximately 92.6% of the country’s electricity consumption of 552,055 MWh during the same period. The data released by the State Statistical Office highlights a strong reliance on local energy sources, with coal being a significant contributor to electricity generation.
Thermal power plants accounted for the largest share of electricity production, generating 208,015 MWh or 40.7% of the total output, marking a year-on-year increase of 23.9%. Hydropower facilities also played a crucial role, producing 101,523 MWh (19.9%), reflecting a growth of 25.5%. Notably, combined heat and power (CHP) plants saw an impressive increase, generating 143,030 MWh (27.5%), which represents a staggering rise of 142.4% compared to October 2024.
Wind farms contributed significantly as well, producing 34,784 MWh (6.8%). Additionally, biogas plants added 3,516 MWh to the grid while solar power plants generated 20,190 MWh, accounting for approximately 3.95% of total electricity generation in October.
The import-export dynamics shifted during this period, with electricity imports decreasing to 149,453 MWh from 171,356 MWh in October of the previous year. In contrast, exports rose significantly to 108,455 MWh compared to just 70,189 MWh a year earlier. This shift indicates an improving export capacity and potential for North Macedonia to strengthen its position in regional energy markets.
The overall increase in domestic production underscores North Macedonia’s growing energy independence and its ability to meet local demand while enhancing export capabilities. These developments are particularly relevant as the region continues to navigate energy transition challenges and seek sustainable solutions for future energy needs.
