In January 2026, the average electricity price on the Romanian energy exchange, OPCOM, reached €150.51 per megawatt-hour (MWh). This figure represents a significant increase of 7.74% compared to January 2025 and a notable rise of 27.94% from December 2025, when the average baseload price was recorded at €117.64/MWh. The escalating prices reflect ongoing volatility in the regional energy market.
The total volume traded on the day-ahead market during this period amounted to 1.52 million MWh. This marks a decline of 7.75% year-on-year, but it shows a recovery with a 3.63% increase from the previous month. The average hourly traded volume for January was approximately 2,044.2 MWh/h, indicating robust trading activity despite the annual drop.
The overall value of transactions in January reached €236.1 million, which is 3.38% lower than the same month last year but reflects a substantial increase of 34.69% compared to December’s figures. Notably, the share of the day-ahead market in terms of forecasted net consumption was reported at 32.04%, highlighting its critical role in meeting demand.
<pMeanwhile, activity on the intraday market showed mixed results, totaling 160,045.5 MWh for January—down by 12% compared to January 2025 and declining by 6.57% from December levels. However, the average intraday price experienced a significant rise, climbing to €160.9/MWh. This represents an annual increase of 21.25% and a month-on-month rise of 30.99%, indicating heightened demand or supply constraints in real-time trading.
