430-MW Iernut Plant Targets June 2027 Commercial Operation

Romania’s delayed Iernut gas-fired power plant is scheduled to begin commercial operation by the end of June 2027. The revised timetable targets connection of the 430-MW facility to the national electricity network by March, with synchronization planned in the first quarter. Technical testing is due to follow before commercial operation begins by the end of the second quarter.

State-owned gas producer Romgaz is overseeing the outstanding work as general contractor, with General Electric still involved at the site. The combined-cycle plant is designed for gross electrical efficiency of 56.4%. Its flexible generation is intended to respond to shifts in demand and renewable output.

Plant capabilities and Romgaz strategy

Iernut will also have black-start capability, enabling it to restart without an external electricity supply. This could help restore Romania’s grid following a major system outage. The project is part of Romgaz’s strategy to expand beyond natural gas production into electricity generation.
