Romania: Significant increase in electricity generation expected in the next decade

Romania expects significant increase in electricity generation by 2030, according to new Romania’s Energy Strategy. Gross electricity production should reach 77,985 GWh in 2030, compared to 69,748 GWh in 2020.

A significant increase in solar electricity generation is expected, which should rise from 1,982 GWh in 2020 to 7,357 GWh in 2030. When it comes to wind power, it is expected to increase from 7,063 GWh in 2020 to 12,571 GWh in 2030. In general, electricity production from renewable sources should reach a share of 49 % in total gross electricity production in 2030, compared to 39 % in 2020.

As for other energy sources in the energy mix, the share of coal is projected to decrease from 17,500 GWh or 25 %, to 11,893 GWh or 15 %, the share of hydropower will be 16,996 GWh (24 %) in 2020 compared to 17,529 GWh (23 %) in 2030, the share of nuclear energy will increase from 11,709 GWh (17 %) to 16,526 GWh (21 %) and the share of gas-fired electricity generation should be reduced from 13,265 GWh (19 %) to 11,208 GWh (14 %).

Other energy sources represented in the energy mix such as oil and its derivatives, as well as biomass and biogas, whose share will remain around 1 %.
