Europe: Power prices climb across major markets amid lower wind generation

Weekly average electricity prices increased across most major European electricity markets during the fourth week of September, with Italy the only market to record a decline. The Nordic market posted the strongest weekly increase, with prices rising 35%, followed by Great Britain with a 31% gain. Prices also climbed by 18% in the Netherlands, 17% in Belgium, 14% in Germany and 12% in France. Spain and Portugal recorded more moderate increases of 9.7% and 10%, respectively, while Italy saw prices fall by 6.7%.

Despite the decline, Italy once again recorded the highest weekly average price, at €201.47/MWh. The Nordic market remained at the other end of the range, with the lowest weekly average of €109.72/MWh. In the remaining markets analyzed by AleaSoft Energy Forecasting, weekly average prices ranged from €144.87/MWh in Spain to €176.70/MWh in Great Britain.

Most markets reached their weekly price peaks on Tuesday, September 22. Great Britain recorded €230.16/MWh, the highest daily price among the analyzed markets and its highest level since January 23, 2025. Prices in Germany and the Netherlands also exceeded €220/MWh, reaching €226.18/MWh and €223.94/MWh, respectively, while Belgium reached €211.18/MWh. Italy reached its weekly peak of €224.23/MWh on Monday, September 21, and remained above €200/MWh from Monday through Friday. France, Portugal and Spain recorded their weekly highs on Friday, September 25, at €161.52/MWh, €161.38/MWh and €158.92/MWh, respectively.

The Nordic market recorded the lowest price of the week, at €52.11/MWh on Monday, September 21. Prices fell across all analyzed markets on Sunday, September 27, compared with the previous day. France, Portugal, Spain, Great Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands all registered their weekly lows that day, with prices ranging from €113.65/MWh in Spain to €118.54/MWh in Great Britain. The Nordic market remained the lowest-priced market on the day, at €56.07/MWh.

Lower wind power generation across most markets contributed to higher electricity prices despite declining gas prices. In Great Britain and Portugal, stronger electricity demand also supported prices. Italy followed a different pattern, with higher wind generation and lower demand contributing to the weekly decline.

For the week beginning September 28, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects electricity prices to rise across most of the analyzed European markets. Italy and Great Britain are the main exceptions, with prices forecast to decline in both markets, according to AleaSoft.
