The new Czech Government announced that the use of coal in energy production will cease by 2033,at the same time increasing investments in nuclear energy and renewable energy sources.
The statement from the Government, led by Petr Fiala, said that it will create the necessary conditions for the energy transformation and
development of the coal regions to make it possible to eliminate coal by 2033.
The former Czech Government, led by Andrej Babis, did not approve a target date for coal phase-out, but an advisory group recommended 2038 in a plan that was criticized by environmental NGOs for not being ambitious enough.
At the moment, coal-fired power plants are responsible for almost 50 % of the Czech Republic’s total electricity production.
