The Hungarian energy exchange, HUPX, reported a notable surge in electricity prices for January 2026, with the average day-ahead market price reaching 150.41 euros/MWh. This represents a substantial 29.8% increase from December 2025, where the average baseload price was recorded at 115.88 euros/MWh. Additionally, the average peak price on the HUPX day-ahead market climbed to 176.37 euros/MWh, reflecting a rise of 36.4% month-on-month.

The trading activity on HUPX also indicated robust market dynamics, with a total traded volume of 3.41 million MWh in January 2026. This figure marks a 12.1% increase compared to December’s volume of 3.04 million MWh and is up by 29.2% when compared to January 2025’s volume of 2.64 million MWh. In terms of intraday trading, the total traded volume reached 1,098,895 MWh, which is an increase of 5.8% from the previous month.

The participation in the market remained stable during this period, with 113 members registered on the day-ahead market and 105 members active in the intraday continuous market. This level of engagement suggests a consistent interest among market participants amidst fluctuating price conditions.

The significant rise in electricity prices and trading volumes at HUPX reflects broader trends within the energy sector in Hungary and may have implications for energy policy and market strategies moving forward.
