Croatia’s Energy Production Sees Decline in Electricity, Mixed Results in Hydrocarbons

Recent energy statistics from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics reveal a significant shift in the country’s energy landscape. In December 2025, Croatia’s net electricity production reached 1,389 GWh, reflecting a 10.1% decrease from the 1,545 GWh produced in December 2024. This decline is indicative of ongoing challenges within the domestic energy sector.

The breakdown of electricity generation shows that hydropower plants were the largest contributors, generating 558 GWh, or 40.2% of total output. Thermal power plants followed closely with 472 GWh, representing 34%. Wind energy contributed 241 GWh, accounting for 17.4%, while solar power made up a modest 38 GWh, or 2.7%.

The data also highlights a trend in electricity imports and exports during this period. Croatia imported 1,118 GWh, which is a slight reduction of 1.2% compared to the previous year’s imports of 1,131 GWh. Conversely, electricity exports saw a more pronounced drop, totaling 711 GWh, down by 19.7% from last year’s figure of 885 GWh.

<pIn terms of hydrocarbon production, December 2025 marked an increase in natural gas output to 66 million cubic meters, which is up by 3.1%. However, natural gas imports surged significantly to reach 287 million cubic meters, a substantial rise of 58.5%. On the crude oil front, production declined to 39,000 tons, down by 7.2%. In contrast, petroleum products output increased to 324,000 tons, compared to 299,000 tons in December 2024.

The overall statistics underscore a marked decline in domestic electricity generation capabilities, primarily driven by reduced outputs from thermal and hydropower facilities. This trend raises concerns about Croatia’s growing dependence on imported electricity and natural gas resources to meet its energy needs.
