Hungary: MOL to acquire 4 MW biogas power plant

 

MOL Group will acquire the Szarvas biogas power plant from BayWa. It is a waste processing facility that uses organic waste to generate electricity and heat through cogeneration with a peak capacity of 4 MW.

The plant processes over 40,000 tons of waste from the meat production industry in the region annually, with an additional 53,000 tons of residual waste from neighbouring livestock farms and meat processing. Furthermore, around 18,000 tons of agricultural substrate are used as raw material for the facility, producing over 12.5 million cubic meters of biogas.

MOL Group aims to expand its biofuel portfolio to meet the European Union’s Directive on Renewable Energy targets. This acquisition is also in line with the goals of the REPowerEU action plan, which sets ambitious targets for biogas and methane production to significantly enhance the overall energy independence of the European Union.

For MOL Group, the acquisition of the Szarvas biogas power plant presents an excellent opportunity to expand the company’s sustainable energy production portfolio with the potential for valuable synergies within the company. The plant possesses one of the largest biogas production capacities in Central and Eastern Europe.
