Slovenian electricity consumption increased by more than 8% year on year in August, keeping overall demand ahead of the 2026 system plan. The latest figures also point to a higher likelihood that annual consumption will surpass the original 11 TWh forecast.
August consumption by grid segment
Electricity consumption on the transmission network reached 789.9 GWh during August. Distribution companies accounted for 703.7 GWh, which was up 11.5% year on year and 8.6% above forecast. Hot weather and stronger air-conditioning demand were cited as factors behind the distribution increase.
Large industrial consumers directly connected to the transmission grid recorded a different pattern, with consumption falling to 53.7 GWh. This was around 7% lower than in August 2025 and more than 29% below forecast. Electricity use for pumping at the Avče pumped-storage plant dropped by more than 20%, reaching 32.4 GWh.
January to August transmission-system figures
For the period January to August, Slovenian transmission-system consumption exceeded 7,229 GWh. The total was up 3.3% year on year and around 0.8% above plan. These data indicate that the demand growth in 2026 is being driven mainly by distribution-connected consumption rather than large industrial users.
This shift is reflected in the direction of full-year electricity demand relative to the original system forecast of 11 TWh, based on the August and January-August figures.
