Hungary: HUPX day-ahead power prices jump 24% in August as trading volumes rise

Hungarian day-ahead electricity prices rose significantly in August, while trading volumes increased both month on month and year on year, reflecting stronger activity on the country’s wholesale power market.

The average HUPX day-ahead baseload price reached €152.17/MWh, marking a 24.4% increase from €122.35/MWh in July. The reported average peak price also climbed sharply, rising 37.6% to €123.17/MWh.

Day-ahead traded volume reached 2.92 TWh in August, up 15.5% from 2.52 TWh in July and 13.6% compared with the 2.57 TWh recorded in August 2025.

Activity on the intraday continuous market remained broadly stable, with turnover reaching almost 1.31 TWh, an increase of 0.9% month on month.

HUPX had 133 registered day-ahead members in August, three more than in July, while the number of members active on the intraday continuous market stood at 130.

The combination of higher trading volumes and sharply rising baseload prices points to tighter market conditions in Hungary during August. Continued growth in participation and traded volumes also reinforces the role of HUPX as an important price reference for Southeast European electricity markets.
