Bulgaria’s day-ahead power trading rises as August prices surge

Trading activity on Bulgaria’s day-ahead electricity market increased in August, with both traded volumes and wholesale prices rising sharply compared with July.

A total of 3.03 TWh was traded on the Independent Bulgarian Energy Exchange (IBEX) day-ahead segment, representing a 3% month-on-month increase and a 20.6% rise year on year. Average daily trading volume stood at approximately 97,586 MWh.

The average baseload electricity price increased by 28% from July, reaching €143.15/MWh, compared with €111.74/MWh a month earlier. The reported average peak price stood at €111.15/MWh, marking a 44% monthly increase.

The number of registered participants on the IBEX day-ahead market remained unchanged at 155, indicating stable market participation despite the significant increase in trading activity and prices.

Trading also strengthened on the intraday continuous market, where total traded volume reached 1.12 TWh, up 25% from July. At the same time, the weighted average price rose by 41.8% to €141.35/MWh.

The August figures point to a stronger and more active short-term electricity market in Bulgaria, with higher liquidity accompanied by a substantial repricing of wholesale electricity. The simultaneous increase in trading volumes and prices highlights stronger market activity and tighter short-term price dynamics.
