Production and demand trends to Sept. 6
Bulgaria’s electricity production increased 9.65% year on year to 30.64 TWh between Jan. 1 and Sept. 6, according to data from Bulgaria’s Electricity System Operator. Domestic consumption rose 7.77% to 28.04 TWh over the same period. The power trade balance recorded a surplus of 2.60 TWh, compared with 1.93 TWh in the corresponding period a year earlier.
The higher output was supported by stronger hydropower and renewable generation, which contributed to the wider surplus. The increase in available generation was particularly pronounced in hydropower.
Hydropower and renewable generation growth
Hydroelectric output climbed to 3.60 TWh from 2.01 TWh, an increase of almost 80%. Renewable electricity connected to the transmission network rose 23% to 3.57 TWh. Renewable generation in distribution networks increased 8.4% to 3.19 TWh.
The changes in generation availability affect how much electricity can be supplied beyond domestic demand during periods of surplus.
Regional implications for cross-border flows
The wider power surplus strengthens Bulgaria’s potential role as an exporter into neighbouring markets when domestic generation exceeds demand. Bulgaria is positioned between Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece and Turkey, enabling it to influence flows across several regional corridors.
This matters for Southeast European price formation as traders assess how surplus conditions translate into cross-border availability.
Hydro recovery after summer constraints
The hydro recovery is described as particularly important following drought and low Danube levels that raised concerns over hydro and nuclear availability across parts of Southeast Europe during the summer. While the improvement supports current generation conditions, it does not remove structural risks, with availability able to change rapidly based on hydrology and nuclear performance.
Hydropower can respond more quickly to changing system conditions than baseload generation, providing both electricity and flexibility during peak-price periods. Stronger hydro availability can also reduce reliance on thermal generation when solar and wind output weakens.
Timing of exports as solar penetration increases
For regional traders, the key question increasingly focuses on which hours Bulgaria’s surplus reaches neighbouring markets rather than whether excess generation exists overall. As solar penetration rises across Bulgaria and Greece, daytime export availability may increase while evening scarcity remains comparatively more valuable.
This shifts attention toward storage, hydro flexibility and cross-border capacity allocation .
