Greece: New 877 MW gas-fired power plant in Komotini begins trial runs ahead of 2025 launch

The 877 MW combined cycle gas-fired power plant in Komotini, co-developed by GEK-TERNA and Motor Oil Hellas, has received its first gas supplies for trial runs ahead of its commercial launch, scheduled for February 2025. The project represents an investment of approximately €375 million.

Greek natural gas transmission system operator DESFA confirmed that the facility received a small gas quantity of 587 kWh last month. Featuring a state-of-the-art gas turbine, the CHPP Komotini boasts an impressive energy efficiency of 64%. This plant is the second gas-fired facility developed in Greece in recent years, following a similar project in Viotia operated by Metlen.

Strategically located in northeastern Greece, CHPP Komotini is positioned near key interconnections with Turkey, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia, enhancing the stability and integration of the Greek electricity network.
