In a significant development for the renewable energy landscape in Southeast Europe, Turkish developer Fortis Energy has commenced construction on a new solar power facility in southeastern Albania. This project, located near the town of Erseke, will feature a solar power plant with an installed capacity of 62 MW combined with a battery storage system.
Once operational, the solar park is projected to generate approximately 135 GWh of clean electricity annually, thereby enhancing Albania’s energy supply with a reliable and sustainable source. This initiative aligns with the country’s efforts to increase its renewable energy footprint and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
A key component of this project is the integrated battery energy storage system, which will have a capacity of 25 MWh. This system is designed to store excess solar energy produced during peak sunlight hours and release it during periods of high demand or low sunlight. Such capabilities are expected to significantly improve grid stability and operational flexibility, addressing one of the critical challenges in integrating renewable sources into existing power systems.
The necessary construction permit was granted by Albanian authorities earlier this summer, allowing Fortis Energy to initiate site works promptly. This swift progress indicates strong regulatory support for renewable investments in the region.
Fortis Energy is not only focusing on this project but is also expanding its portfolio across Albania, with plans for additional solar parks near Diber, Shkoder, Fier, and Vlore. Collectively, these projects are expected to contribute several hundred megawatts to the national grid, reinforcing Fortis’s ambition to establish itself as a significant player in Albania’s burgeoning renewable energy sector.
This development reflects broader trends in Southeast Europe where countries are increasingly prioritizing renewable energy initiatives as part of their strategies for energy transition and sustainability.
