In November 2025, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) reported a notable decline in gross electricity production, totaling 694 GWh. This figure represents an 8.1% decrease from the 755 GWh generated in the same month of the previous year. The reduction in output underscores ongoing challenges within the region’s energy sector, which is grappling with fluctuations in production capacity and resource availability.
The composition of electricity generation during this period revealed that hydropower plants accounted for 40.9%, while thermal power plants contributed 51.4%. Wind farms made up the remaining 7.7% of total gross production. This mix highlights a continued reliance on thermal sources, despite the region’s potential for renewable energy integration.
Net electricity production was reported at 650 GWh, with hydropower generating 280 GWh, thermal sources producing 317 GWh, and wind contributing 53 GWh. The shift towards greater thermal generation may reflect strategic adjustments to meet demand amid declining hydropower outputs, which could be influenced by seasonal variations.
The trade dynamics for electricity also shifted during this period. Electricity imports decreased significantly to 99 GWh, down from 216 GWh in November 2024. Conversely, exports saw an increase to 122 GWh, compared to 105 GWh the previous year, indicating a potential strengthening in regional export capabilities despite domestic production challenges.
<pOn the fuel production front, brown coal output fell to 258,762 tons, reflecting a substantial decline of 12.6% from last year’s figures of 296,024 tons. Lignite production also saw a decrease of 9%, dropping from 108,923 tons to 99,172 tons. The most pronounced drop was observed in coke production, which plummeted by 49.3%, totaling only 18,619 tons, down from 36,712 tons.
This downward trend in both electricity and fuel production raises critical questions about the sustainability and resilience of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s energy sector. As regulatory frameworks evolve and market conditions fluctuate, stakeholders will need to adapt strategies that balance energy security with environmental considerations.
