Austrian renewable energy company Enery has begun construction of a large-scale solar and battery storage project in southern Romania. The development is located in Giurgiu County, near Ogrezeni. The project is valued at more than €460 million and is described as one of the biggest energy investments currently underway in the region.
Project location, size and technology
The planned facility includes a solar power plant with an installed capacity of 750 MW. It also features a battery energy storage system with storage capability exceeding 1 GWh. The total installed capacity for the combined site is set at 761 MW.
The integrated design is intended to increase renewable electricity generation while supporting grid flexibility and stability. Excess solar power is planned to be stored and later used when demand is higher or when generation drops. The project combines large-scale solar production with battery storage.
Permitting and timeline for commissioning
Enery secured network connection approval for the project in 2023. The company has positioned the development as a step toward pairing solar output with advanced storage solutions. This sequence follows the approval process before construction began.
Commercial operations are scheduled to start in the summer of 2027. Once completed, the site is expected to rank among the largest hybrid solar-plus-storage installations in Romania. It is also expected to function as a major renewable energy hub in Southeastern Europe.
