Brajići wind farm in Montenegro moves to full environmental impact assessment

Montenegro’s planned 100.8 MW Brajići wind farm will enter a full environmental impact assessment after the Environmental Protection Agency determined that a more detailed review is needed before the project can proceed. The decision triggers an additional formal stage in the permitting process, including public participation and objections.

Environmental study requirements for Vjetroelektrana Budva

The project company Vjetroelektrana Budva must prepare a comprehensive study as part of the environmental review. The document is required to cover existing environmental conditions, expected impacts, and mitigation measures.

The study also needs to include operational monitoring requirements and procedures for potential accidents. The scope of the assessment is intended to support evaluation of how the development could affect the surrounding area.

Local opposition and concerns beyond ecology

The Brajići project has faced sustained opposition from local residents and environmental groups. Criticism has extended beyond conventional ecological concerns to potential effects on landscape, cultural heritage, archaeology, tourism, and recreational use of the area.

Some opponents have also raised questions about possible interference with aerial firefighting operations. These issues are expected to be part of the broader public participation and objection process associated with the full EIA.

Development timeline and initial investment estimate

Brajići has been under development since at least 2020. In that year, a consortium led by Germany’s WDP signed a land lease agreement with the Montenegrin government.

At the time of the agreement, investment was estimated at around €101.3 million. The project’s next steps follow the Environmental Protection Agency ruling requiring a more detailed review before advancement.
