Višegrad hydropower output drops in June 2026 amid weaker summer river flows

June generation at 315 MW Višegrad plant

Electricity production at the 315 MW Višegrad hydropower plant fell to 44.02 GWh in June 2026. The June figure was 39.5% lower than the 72.73 GWh generated in May. Output still exceeded the 33.74 GWh recorded in June 2025, corresponding to a year-on-year increase of roughly 30%.

The plant generated 627.51 GWh during the first six months of 2026. This total is equivalent to more than 62% of its long-term average annual production of approximately 1,010 GWh. Deterioration in summer hydrology makes the second-half trajectory less certain .

Operator, unit configuration and recent output history

Hidroelektrane na Drini, a subsidiary of Elektroprivreda Republike Srpske, operates the Višegrad facility. The plant produced 781.8 GWh in 2025, compared with 733 GWh in 2024. Its historical record stands at 1,283.05 GWh, achieved in 2010.

The facility was commissioned in 1989. It comprises three 105 MW units on the Drina River. Hydropower output is described as relevant for the wider Bosnian electricity balance because it provides relatively low-cost energy and flexibility to cover peak demand and support exports .

Export flows and regional hydrology affecting power systems

Bosnia and Herzegovina remained a net exporter in early August, delivering approximately 245 MW on average to neighbouring systems. A sustained reduction in hydro output would increase the burden on the country’s coal-fired plants and reduce electricity available for sale to Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia. The June decline is also linked to weaker hydrological conditions across parts of Southeast Europe.

The broader regional pattern includes weaker hydrology in Serbia, Romania, Croatia and parts of the western Balkans. Low levels on the Danube are simultaneously affecting both hydropower generation and cooling-water availability for nuclear plants. This combination increases the value of reservoir storage and dispatchable generation during evening hours .

Summer operations and water allocation priorities for Višegrad

The plant’s strong first-half output provides some protection for the annual result, but summer operating conditions are becoming more decisive. Višegrad’s commercial value is expected to depend increasingly on preserving water for high-price periods rather than maximising continuous output during a drought-sensitive market . The shift aligns with the observed June decline as river flows weaken into summer.
