Federation of Bosnia electricity output rises 15.3% as coal production falls

Gross electricity production in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina reached 534 GWh in September, up 15.3% from 463 GWh in September 2025. The rise came as domestic coal output continued to decline. Electricity generation increasingly relied on hydropower and non-coal sources to help maintain system balance.

Thermal plants produced 59.9% of the gross total, while hydropower accounted for 31.5% and wind for 8.6%. Net generation was 482 GWh. Of that amount, thermal plants supplied 282 GWh, hydropower 154 GWh and wind farms 46 GWh.

Higher domestic generation reduced the Federation’s electricity imports to 99 GWh, from 176 GWh a year earlier. Exports also fell, to 45 GWh from 133 GWh. Most of the additional domestic output was therefore absorbed within the local system rather than sold abroad.

Coal production declines

Coal production figures remained considerably weaker. Brown-coal output dropped 32.7% to 216,984 tonnes, compared with 322,292 tonnes in September 2025. Lignite production fell 20.7% to 104,516 tonnes from 131,720 tonnes.

Electricity generation increased even as production of both types of coal declined. This divergence leaves the Federation facing a structural issue also affecting several Western Balkan systems. Thermal generation remains central to security of supply as the fuel base supporting it becomes increasingly constrained.
