Solar Output Soars in Europe, Wind Energy Faces Decline

Recent developments in European energy markets have highlighted a significant increase in solar photovoltaic energy production, particularly during the week of February 16. Portugal led the surge with an impressive 95% rise in output, marking its third consecutive week of growth. Spain followed closely with a 69% increase, also extending its upward trend for three weeks. Italy’s production rose by 62%, continuing a four-week streak of gains. France saw a recovery with a 39% increase, while Germany’s growth remained modest at 5.4%.

Italy achieved a notable milestone on February 22, establishing a new all-time February record for daily solar generation, reaching 110 GWh. Looking ahead to the week of February 23, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predict further increases in solar production across Germany, Italy, and Spain.

Wind energy also experienced fluctuations during the same week. In Germany, wind power generation surged by 60%, recovering from two weeks of decline. Italy recorded a 33% increase in wind energy output, reversing its previous downward trend. France continued its growth trajectory for the third consecutive week with a slight rise of 1.7%. Conversely, wind generation faced substantial declines on the Iberian Peninsula, dropping by 56% in Portugal and 33% in Spain.

On February 17, Italy set a new record for wind energy production on a February day with an output of 178 GWh. However, projections indicate that wind energy output is expected to decrease across major European markets in the week of February 23, as per AleaSoft Energy Forecasting’s latest outlook.
