On the morning of Thursday, January 8, Slovenia’s electricity system faced an unprecedented surge in demand, attributed to a combination of harsh winter weather and diminished renewable energy output. Heavy snowfall prior to this peak event obscured solar installations across the country, significantly curtailing their energy production as temperatures fell well below freezing.
The extreme cold prompted widespread reliance on electric heating solutions, such as heat pumps and various electric heaters, which operated at maximum capacity during the critical morning hours. Between 8:00 and 9:00 AM, these factors collectively exerted immense pressure on the national electricity grid.
Data from ELES indicates that the average electricity withdrawal from Slovenia’s transmission network reached an extraordinary 2,299.7 MW during this peak hour, excluding losses within the network. This figure not only marks a historic high for the country but also surpasses the previous record of 2,228 MW established in March 2018.
This recent spike in demand highlights the increasing vulnerability of electricity systems to extreme weather phenomena, especially when renewable energy resources are limited and heating requirements escalate sharply. The incident serves as a critical reminder for policymakers and energy companies about the need for robust energy planning and infrastructure capable of withstanding such climatic challenges.
