Serbia: EPS TPP TENT Nikola Tesla investments in new filters

10 electrostatic precipitators, power of 100 to 600 megawatts units, are reconstructed. An investment of 67 million EUR enabled dust emissions from the units of TENT to be complied with European and domestic regulations.

Upon completion of the reconstruction of electrostatic precipitators in TPP “Morava” in Svilajnac, at the end of August, works are successfully completed on modernization of ESP facilities in all units with power of 100 to 600 megawatts within the Thermal Power Plant “Nikola Tesla” (TENT) branch.

Reconstruction of these facilities initiated in 2004, at the electrostatic precipitator of the unit TENT A5, and successively continued to nine more units of the TENT branch, in which the largest thermal capacities of EPS are installed. An investment of 67 million EUR enabled, that dust emissions from 10 units of TENT branch, is reduced down to 50 milligrams per cubic meter, and to be harmonized with European and domestic regulations. Most of the funds are provided by EPS, and also EU funds from the pre-accession funds (IPA) are used, loans, and assets of the Fund for Environmental Protection of the Republic of Serbia.

– With the reconstruction of electrostatic precipitators in TPP “Morava”, the first step in reducing emissions of air pollutants from the TENT facilities ends, where emission reductions are planned. Dust emissions has been reduced by more than 85 percent. This significantly affects positive changes in the air quality around the plant – said Mr. Zoran Bajic, Head of the Control and Environmental Protection Division in TENT branch. – Since, some emissions of nitrogen oxides reduction measures are taken so far, such as installing of low-emission burners on units A3 and A5, it has been shown that the optimization of the combustion process can increase the efficiency of electrostatic precipitators.

He pointed out that the additional positive effect on the dust emissions reduction can be expected after the construction and commissioning of desulphurization plant, and possibly introduction of secondary measures of nitrogen oxides reduction, if they prove to be necessary.

– In this way, the concentration of emitted dust could be lowered by additional, about 80 – Mr. Bajic said.

With the process of electrosatic treatemnet, flue gases with fly ash particles are passed through an electrical field, and this process is implemented in several phases.

– In the beginning, dust is electrically charged, which move towards the electrodes, where is collected, and afterwards is discharged from the electrodes. The deposited ash from the electrode is rapped and falls into electrostatic precipitators hoppers, from where is transported. Significantly lower amounts of dust emits, from the total amount entered in electrostatic precipitator – explained Mr. Goran Strugar, Technologist for control of emissions and treatment devices in TENT branch.

Within the process of electrostatic precipitator modernization, old electrodes were replaced by new ones, which have a larger surface area and different shape, for a more efficient dust charge. An active cross-section of electrostatic precipitators is increased, then the flue gases speed is reduced, modern high-voltage transformers are installed, and secondary voltage level of electrical fields is increased, together increasing the electrostatic precipitator efficiency and air quality.
