OMV Petrom plans to add a 20-MW/40-MWh battery to its Ișalnița solar project in Romania, converting the development into a hybrid renewable generation and storage facility. The battery addition is linked to the Ișalnița site in Dolj county.
Battery supply and construction timeline
The battery will be supplied by Romanian engineering company Simtel Team. The work will be carried out under an engineering, procurement and construction contract. Completion is expected about seven months after signing.
Project scale and expected generation
The storage system will be paired with OMV Petrom’s first wholly owned large-scale solar plant. The Ișalnița facility is expected to have capacity of about 89 MW. It is forecast to generate approximately 130 GWh annually.
Role of storage in power output and flexibility
The battery is intended to store part of the daytime solar output and release it when demand or prices are higher. It can also support balancing and other flexibility services as Romania adds more variable renewable capacity. The battery’s duration is described as modest at around two hours, which would not cover long supply gaps.
OMV Petrom’s regional generation and storage portfolio
OMV Petrom operates the 860-MW Brazi gas-fired power plant. The company is developing or constructing more than 1.2 GW of renewable capacity with partners. It is also working on the Gabare battery project in Bulgaria, expected to provide around 600 MWh of storage.
