Romania sees 90.5% surge in planned renewable energy capacity

As of September 1, Romania has achieved a significant milestone in renewable energy development, boasting 3.51 GW of planned capacity for which project developers have secured all necessary permits. This marks an impressive 90.5% increase compared to six months prior. Additionally, the total capacity with technical connection approvals surged by 48.2%, reaching 51.3 GW.

The Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) projects that 39 renewable energy source (RES) projects, with a combined installed capacity of 716 MW, will become operational by the end of the year. These projects have already secured network connection contracts and construction permits. Looking forward, another 32 facilities, totaling 2.38 GW, are expected to come online in 2025. However, the development of the necessary network infrastructure remains a significant challenge, as is the case across much of Europe.

This update focuses on RES projects with capacities exceeding 1 MW. In the six months leading up to September 1, the number of projects with all primary permits rose from 77 to 87, with the total installed capacity reaching 3.51 GW. Romania’s RES project pipeline has now grown to three times the size of its current electricity capacity, with projects holding technical connection approvals increasing by 48.2% to 51.3 GW—almost triple the country’s existing installed capacity. The number of planned units in this category rose from 878 to 1,111 during the same period.

Of the 247 projects with connection contracts and construction permits, 18 (representing 832 MW) include integrated energy storage units, with seven projects totaling 59 MW expected to be completed by the end of the year.
