According to data from the National Institute for Statistics (INS), electricity consumption in Romania during the first eight months of 2025 totaled 33.3 TWh, a decline of 0.8% compared to the same period in 2024.
Industrial electricity consumption reached 25.06 TWh, down 1.8% from last year, while household consumption increased by 2.5% to 7.99 TWh. Public lighting usage decreased by 5.3%, amounting to 254.7 GWh.
Total electricity production in the first eight months of 2025 amounted to 33.27 TWh, 6.6% lower than in 2024. Thermal power plants produced 10.89 TWh, a decline of 4.3%, and hydropower production dropped by 23.7% to 8.08 TWh. Nuclear generation at the Cernavoda plant rose slightly by 1.1%, reaching 7.08 TWh. Wind power production fell by 8.2% to 3.76 TWh, while solar power generation, including prosumers, increased by 35.1% to 3.45 TWh.
Electricity exports in the period reached 9.35 TWh, up 29.1% compared to 2024, while imports rose 49.3% to 12.62 TWh.
Total production of primary energy resources in the first eight months of 2025 amounted to 10,952.2 million tons of oil equivalent, 3.3% lower than in 2024. Coal production decreased by 1.2% to 1,262.3 million tons of oil equivalent, oil production fell by 7.7% to 1,668.8 million tons, and natural gas production declined by 1.7% to 4,969.4 million tons of oil equivalent.
