Romania: Electricity capacity grows by 1.9 GW in 2024, including new coal-fired power

Romania’s electricity generation capacity increased by 1.9 GW in 2024, largely driven by the rise in solar prosumers. For the first time in several years, this growth also included new coal-fired capacity.

Of the new capacity, 894 MW came from prosumers who installed photovoltaic panels with the help of state subsidies. Additionally, by early 2025, Romania’s coal-fired electricity generation capacity will rise by 253 MW compared to the previous year, marking a significant shift despite the country’s commitment to phasing out coal. This increase follows the completion of a 330 MW refurbishment at the TPP Rovinari coal plant by state-owned Energy Complex (EC) Oltenia, which took ten years and cost 100 million euros.

Over the past decade, Romania has shut down coal-fired power plants totaling 2,700 MW, with no replacement capacity provided by the state.
