At Eurelectric, an association representing the European electricity sector that brings together more than 3,500 companies in electricity generation, distribution and supply, new President was selected. It is Jean-Bernard Levy, President and CEO of the French EDF Group.
His two-year term will continue with the transformations needed to shift from fossil fuels, in an effort to bring the Green Deal to life by electrification. Two Vice-Presidents were also elected – Corina Popescu, CEO of Electrica, Romania’s electricity supplier and distributor, and Leonhard Birnbaum, CEO of German E.ON. Together, they will seek to take decisive steps to put renewable and low-carbon electricity production at the heart of the Europe’s Green Deal, fostering a sustainable and cost-effective energy transition in EU member states.
As presented in the manifesto, their mandate will be based on four pillars of a shared vision:
Promoting the Green Deal as a social, industrial and strategic opportunity for all Europeans;
Leading an affordable, low-carbon lifestyle with electricity as the main energy source, addressing discriminatory taxation of energy that disrupts electricity and supporting increased carbon prices;
Ensuring that a range of low-carbon technologies contribute to cost-effective decarbonization, further development of renewable energy sources, smart grids and hydrogen uptake from electrolysis for industrial applications;
Demonstrate the resilience and flexibility of electricity as a key strength of the Green Deal, while fostering smart integration and highlighting the benefits of digitization.
Eurelectric represents the interests of the European electricity industry. With members in over 30 European countries, it combines more than 3,500 companies involved in the production, distribution and supply of electricity, which directly employ 970,000 people and have an annual turnover of 627 billion euros.
