North Macedonia’s OKTA has started operating battery storage alongside its 12 MW solar plant, marking the company’s first move into electricity storage. The project adds two battery containers that have entered operation. A third container is scheduled to be commissioned in the coming months.
When fully completed, the installation is expected to provide around 3 MW of power and 6 MWh of storage capacity. OKTA estimates the system could store about 2,100 MWh of electricity over a year.
Battery storage role for solar output and market exposure
The battery is designed to shift solar production from periods of high generation into hours with stronger demand or more favourable market prices. This arrangement is intended to give the plant greater control over its wholesale-market exposure. The storage operation therefore links solar generation timing with market conditions.
OKTA’s expansion beyond conventional energy infrastructure
For OKTA, traditionally associated with petroleum supply and conventional energy infrastructure, the battery project also represents a broader move into renewable generation and flexibility assets. The development expands the company’s footprint from solar generation into electricity storage capability.
