Greece commissions €188 million high-pressure gas pipeline for Western Macedonia

New high-pressure transmission line in northern Greece

Greece has commissioned a new high-pressure natural gas pipeline in Western Macedonia, expanding the national gas transmission network and improving energy access in the northern part of the country. The project forms part of DESFA’s infrastructure build-out for the gas transmission system. The works were developed by DESFA and are valued at approximately €188 million.

The pipeline covers 157 kilometers and runs through Central Macedonia to Kardia. DESFA said the line strengthens the backbone of Greece’s gas infrastructure. The commissioning supports additional connectivity in areas that previously lacked direct access to natural gas transmission.

Link to combined heat and power district heating plans

The new transmission pipeline is designed to support a combined heat and power facility being developed by Public Power Corporation (PPC). The CHP plant is intended to supply district heating systems in Kozani, Ptolemaida, and Amyntaio.

The district heating supply is expected to replace older lignite-based heating solutions in the region. The pipeline’s role is therefore tied to fuel availability for the planned heat and power operations.

Role in energy transition and gas demand expansion

DESFA described the project as a key element for supporting the energy transition in Western Macedonia. This comes as the region continues its shift away from lignite-fired electricity generation. The company also said the investment is expected to improve overall energy supply security.

DESFA added that the commissioning should open further opportunities for industrial and municipal gas consumption across Central and Western Macedonia.
